The material of the work of art does not become invisible in its practical availability or usefulness like the material of an object of utility, but on the contrary only emerges as such in the work. The work always withdraws into its materiality before any development. However, because the material of the work of art cannot realize the coherence and meaning that is carried out on it, every possible formation of meaning is referred to the facticity of the material. The material, for its part, is always already waiting with latent meaningfulness and stimulates new meaning formation.
